Scotch Acoustic Sessions (ScAS)

Scotch Acoustic Sessions (ScAS) by Patrick K.-H. is a series of work-in progress pieces.
It comes out in frames of acousmatic conception of restriction the one’s working sonic-material, in order to research the immanent colors of each single sonic-object. Above ScAS, this attitude to a composition brought Patrick K.-H. to create PhAS (PhotoAcoustic Session piece, 2003), and later – Concrete Choirs series (work-in-progress, since 2005).
ScAS deals with only scotch tape samples, recorded by various types of microphones, including stereo, magnetic pick-ups, contact pick-ups, from inside, outside and from a distance. Scotch tape was also used and recorded as guitar strings and a drum surface, above many more useful ways to deal with it as in a daily life. Recorded material was digitally processed then with convolution, granulizer, pitch, audio-to-picture and back, and many other basic effects, just excluding popular modern “fast-food” filters /plug-ins.
At this 1st level of 2004, resulted sonic mutants were selected into 3 blocks, mostly by its dynamic and length, then putted into sample banks and played live by one to four laptop performers. No special scores were required but timing of each block and total timing, performers were only obliged to weave the musical texture from given material, according to those personal musicality and sense of sound. In this kind, ScAS was performed in several festivals and art-centers, including “Altermedium” and “DOM” (Moscow). After 2005, recorded audio-documentation was used as a soundtrack for several contemporary dance pieces, and for authorized video-installation.
In 2008, invited into residence of Diapason Gallery for sound art, NYC, Patrick K.-H. decided to research the spatial sound conception and practice through his well-known ScAS sonic-material. During the residence, he rearranged it into extended duration 8-channel sound installation. At this 2nd level, many kinds of scotch tape that belongs to it in real world were almost returned to it back with big changes. Now listener inside 8-channel installation can be acoustically packed / unpacked, fully and partly, also acoustically “see” it near / far from him or her, or fill himself a fly or a piece of dust on the glue of scotch tape, etc. 8-channel version was several times presented in Diapason Gallery(2008), NYC, also installed at “Oslokino UFO”(2008) and performed live at “Another Space” (2009), “Chromodynamics” (2009) and “Black Box” (2009) festivals in Moscow, Russia.
