KIMMO POHJONEN KLUSTER & DakhaBrakha

Kimmo Pohjonen Kluster is the project featuring Finnish accordion dynamo Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling master Juuso Hannukainen. In Kluster, the Pohjonen / Hannukainen partnership takes accordion music to new and unexplored territory. On stage, Hannukainen reproduces samples of Pohjonen’s accordion and voice percussively by way of electronic drum pads and combines it with Pohjonen’s accordion, voice, live loops, electronic effects and surround sound to create a brain bursting maelstrom of multi-dimensional music unlike anything done or heard before.

Kimmo Pohjonen’s mission is to expand the capabilities, sound, performance, scope and experience of the accordion. Playing since age ten, Pohjonen has performed and recorded in rock, folk, theatre, dance, classical, improvisational and avant-garde music groups and ensembles for three decades and has played on over eighty albums.

“In the hands of Finland’s Kimmo Pohjonen, the accordion abandons its folk roots to become a gutbusting furnace of shamanic sound, animated by primal energies and orchestral dynamics…a performer whose blend of virtuosity and resolute experimentation is routinely likened to that of Jimi Hendrix and Laurie Anderson.”
